Patriot One (PAT.T) has partnered with Vancouver-based artificial intelligence company Xtract Technologies for joint research and development.
Xtract Technologies will work with three of the Patriot One’s PATSCAN platform component teams—specifically CMR, TMS and VRS—to explore how AI technology can be used to augment multiple data sets, such as people and threats, to improve overall sensor threat-detection performance.
If successful, this company will bring next-level machine learning to Patriot One’s PATSCAN series of programs by allowing their devices to learn and adapt to new threats.

Artificial neural networks have been a regular staple of science fiction since the 1960s, when Robert Heinlein had an AI on the moon hurl gigantic rocks at Earth as part of an interplanetary resistance.
Patriot One isn’t working on anything like that, obviously, but that’s how far the human imagination has taken the artificial intelligence concept. Most people think AI and experience either terror at the possibilities inherent in the singularity, or enthusiastic about not having to work again because the robots will do all the grunt work.
It also earmarks the difference between science fiction and reality—the needs of dramatists and the requirements of real world aren’t even remotely comparable. Instead of killer robots or all-purpose electronic maids, we’re likely to get smarter toasters that recognize the difference between a child’s hand and a piece of bread.
Artificial neural networks are computing systems inspired by, but not necessarily identical to, the biological neural networks that constitute animal brains. At this level of development, these systems “learn” to perform tasks by considering examples.
For example, in Patriot One’s case, someone may pass through a door guarded by their PATSCAN service, and the magnetic machinery could theoretically detect both a pencil in their left pocket and a gun in their pants. Through scripts that identify images that contain both pencils and guns, the computer behind it would able to recognize and categorize the gun and the pencil accordingly, and issue the corresponding security response.
That’s what’s neat about artificial intelligence.
Now imagine its functionality in the airport: fewer patdowns from airport security. Less of a hassle. No fuss. You may even be able to skip the process of irradiating everything in your carry-on.

Strong, silent type – doing the work
This company isn’t the type to put out press releases to get temporary bumps in their stock price, and the past few months have been mostly quiet. But having watched this company develop over the past year, it’s pretty safe to say that that’s because they’ve been busy, and if their performance over the past month is any indicator, then they’re definitely one to watch.
