How Empower Clinics (CBDT.C) helps cruise ship tourism dollars return to Vancouver

Empower Clinics (CBDT.C) three COVID-19 testing sites received their diagnostic accreditation program (DAP) certification to increase security for cruise ship traffic in Vancouver.

The three clinics are located at the Port of Vancouver, Canada Place and the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel. If you’re unfamiliar, Canada Place is part of Vancouver’s main convention centre area, located downtown, where most of the cruise ships park their loads while their passengers are off frolicking. It’s one of the most active, noticeable places on Vancouver’s waterfront.

“DAP accreditation is a confirmation of Empower’s quality, competence and safety as recognized by a medical standards body. We now have three of the largest, modern and convenient COVID-19 testing sites in the heart of Canada Place in downtown Vancouver. We are well positioned to serve patients in advance of a busy cruise, convention and tourist season for our beautiful city,” said Steven McAuley, chairman and CEO of Empower Clinics.

All COVID-19 testing in British Columbia needs to go through the accreditation process set forth by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia’s DAP program. The public health officer of B.C, Dr. Bonnie Henry, indicated in March that any site, lab or company that levies a charge for testing for COVID-19 needs to have full accreditation through the DAP, or can’t practice.

Cruise ships are also a good chunk of Vancouver’s tourism economy, so anything that gets them up and floating again is likely to be a net positive not only for the company’s involved, but the city itself. Passengers can visit the Empower Clinics website to book their test, which includes both rapid antigen and rapid PCR, offered at the clinic located at the Fairmont, more or less next door to the port terminal at Canada place, or they can do it virtually through telehealth.
