Sarama Resources (SWA.V): How to buy inferred gold for $4 an ounce

Sarama Resources (SWA.V) is a West African gold developer with three adjoining projects in Burkina Faso that contain a 3 million-ounce inferred resource in the southern Houndé belt.

Before we get into the nuts & bolts of this investment opportunity, let’s define our terms.

According to 43-101 standards, an “inferred resource” is considered “too speculative geologically to have the economic considerations applied to it.”

An “Inferred Mineral Resource” refers to that part of a resource for which quantity and grade or quality can be estimated on the basis of geological evidence and limited sampling – but can not verified.”

In other words, a team of geologists has done enough drilling/metallurgy to say he/she believes the gold is there – but not enough to make an official announcement to investors, or to get a bank to finance a mine based on the assertions.

As you see from the above chart, “inferred” is the category of lowest certainty.

When you buy a micro-cap gold stock with an inferred resource, you are largely betting on the ability of the company to raise the level of certainty – which usually requires airborne surveys, drilling, financial modeling and metallurgy.

With a market cap $10 million, Sarama’s inferred gold is currently valued at $3.30 an ounce (we rounded it up to $4/ounce in the headline).  Gold in the measured (highest certainty) category is typically valued at $60-$170 an ounce.

Sarama recently regained a 100% interest in the South Houndé Project in Burkina Faso from Acacia.  The land package is contiguous to Sarama’s 100%-owned ThreeBee Project.

South Hounde and ThreeBee cover 1,400 square kilometers of greenstone terrane and the two projects are Sarama’s main thrust toward mine development. The mined ore should be suitable for heap leaching or a conventional gold plant.

Deal Completion Highlights

  • Sarama regains a 100% ownership interest and operatorship of the Project
  • Increase Sarama’s 100%-owned interests in the southern Houndé Belt to approximately 1,400km².
  • The Project hosts an inferred mineral resource of 2.1 million ounces of gold which includes 0.6 million ounces of gold of oxide and transition material.
  • In addition, the Bondi Deposit, within the ThreeBee Project, has a historical mineral resources estimate of 1 million ounces of gold (measured and indicated) and 0.1 1 million ounces of gold (inferred)

Recent drilling on the ThreeBee Project demonstrates Sarama’s upside in this deal.

  • 22m @ 3.85g/t Au from 5 meters
  • 29m @ 1.44g/t Au from 1 meter and 10m @ 1.24g/t Au from 67 meters
  • 5m @ 4.54g/t Au from 15 meters
  • 3m @ 4.71g/t Au from 51 meters and 3 meters @ 19.86g/t Au from 69 meters

Sarama has benefited from about USD $13 million worth of exploration work done by Acacia on the South Houndé Project.

To complete the deal, Sarama cash payments totaling USD $2 million, staged over a 12-month period, and further cash and royalty payments following commercial production.

“We are keen to resume management of the South Houndé Project on a 100% basis,” stated Sarama President and CEO, Andrew Dinning. “This agreement is fundamental to consolidating our position in the southern Houndé Belt and puts Sarama on a solid footing to advance its interests towards mine development.”

Burkina Faso does carry political risk – but it is one of the world’s last mining frontiers, offering ground in a proven gold territory, that has never been drilled.

Is now a good entry point to purchase Sarama stock?

You decide.

Endeavour Mining (EDV.T) – a $2.4 billion gold miner – is operating the Houndé and and Karma gold mines in Burkina Faso.

According to a recent EDV news release, Houndé is comfortably on track to meet the top end of its full-year 2018 production guidance of 250,000 – 260,000 ounces and the low end of its AISC guidance of $580-630 per ounce.

Karma is on track to meet to the low-end of full-year 2018 production guidance of 105,000 – 115,000 ounces and the top end of AISC guidance of $780-830 per ounce.

Samara Company Overview:

  • Experienced management team and board
  • Pipeline of 3 projects from Early Stage to Scoping Level
  • Scope for resource increase on Djarkadougou Permit
  • New discoveries and extensions to the Bondi Deposit
  • New, 100% owned, 602 km2 project with three +25-kilometer gold corridors
  • Exploration: 2,700 km2 of highly prospective greenstone belt
  • Three adjoining projects containing 3.2 million ounce resources in southern Houndébelt

In 2018, $4 million was spent exploring South Houndé – 100% of that money to Acacia’s account.  About $2.5M exploration spend on Karankasso Project – 27% pro rata share.

Burkina Faso has undergone less than 15 years of modern mineral exploration, remaining under-explored in comparison to neighboring Ghana and Mali.
